Disney releases The Lion King live-action remake of 1994 animated classic
July 19, 2019
Director Jon Favreau’s reworking of the 1994 classic animated feature film, The Lion King, opens with a new cast and the full benefit of CGI to capture the photorealistic effects he achieved with The Jungle Book, a smash box office hit in 2016 that was based on Rudyard Kipling’s classic novel by the same name. Both movies reflect Disney’s drive for live-action remakes of their animated classics.
The plot of the remake, which follows the adventures of the young lion Simba, is expected to remain largely the same as the 1994 original. Simba’s scheming uncle, Scar, plots to usurp the throne of Mufasa, Simba’s father. He lures father and son into a stampede of wildebeests, where Mufasa is killed. Simba escapes and returns as an adult to take back his homeland from Scar.
Donald Glover plays Simba. Singer-songwriter Beyoncé is voicing Simba’s love interest, Nala, and iconic voice actor James Earl Jones is returning to reprise his role as Mufasa from the original movie. Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Scar.
The Lion King lines up alongside a number of live-action Disney reworks in 2019, which include Dumbo, Aladdin and a Maleficent sequel.
