Quem será o próximo Primeiro ministro do Japão?

August 14, 2024 - A decisão de Fumio Kishida de não se candidatar a um segundo mandato como líder do Partido Liberal Democrático (PLD), abre caminho a uma corrida para a sua sucessão como Primeiro ministro.

Support for Kishida, who has been PM since 2021, has fallen in the wake of a corruption scandal involving his party, rising living costs and a slumping yen.

Under Japan's parliamentary system, the leader of the ruling party, or coalition of parties, becomes prime minister. For almost all of Japan's post-World War II history, that has meant the premier has hailed from Kishida's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

The LDP must hold a leadership race every three years. The next one is due to be held in September although the dates have yet to be set.
