Liderança do Hamas após Haniyeh

By Phil Bainbridge

August 1, 2024 - O assassinato do líder do Hamas Ismail Haniyeh em Teerão lançou luz
sobre a liderança opaca, e quem pode suceder-lhe no topo.

Khaled Meshal, chair of the diaspora office of Hamas in Qatar, is considered most likely to take on the political leadership of the militant group, a role he held from 2004-17, despite a strained relationship with Iran due to his support for the Syrian uprising against their ally President Bashar al-Assad. He notably survived a botched assassination attempt in 1997, whilst staying in Amman, which so angered then-King Hussein of Jordan that Israel was forced to supply the antidote.

On the other hand, the leader of Hamas in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, represents a more radical wing of the group, less open to compromise than Haniyeh, and currently believed to be directing military operations in Gaza from tunnels beneath the enclave. Sinwar spent over 20 years in Israeli prison.
