According to the tracking website FlightAware.com, airlines cancelled 12,309 flights and delayed 134,708 others since Friday. The figure includes ongoing cancellations of 1,295 flights and delays to 18,935 others as of Monday, July 22.
More than 1,000 cancellations were from Delta Air Lines, FlightAware shows.
“Cancelling a flight is always a last resort, and something we don’t take lightly,” Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said.
The issue extended beyond airports, with businesses, government agencies, health and emergency services, banks, schools and universities worldwide grinding to a halt due to a flawed software update for Microsoft Windows operating systems issued by the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, CNN reported.
Since the issues started late Thursday, CrowdStrike shares have fallen by 21.5%, from $354.94 on Wednesday to $278.68 on Monday.
