Temperaturas a subir nas maiores cidades do mundo

By Ninian Carter

June 28, 2024 - O número de dias por ano com temperaturas a atingir 35°C em 20 das maiores capitais do mundo – que albergam no seu conjunto cerca de 300 milhões de pessoas – aumentou 52% nos últimos 30 anos

The number of days per year where temperatures reached 35°C or more in 20 of the world’s most populous cities has soared over the past 30 years.

Using surface temperature data gathered from airport weather stations, researchers for the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) have quantified the growing threat of extreme heat in some of the world's largest capital cities.

From 1994 to 2023, Delhi has endured 4,222 days above 35°C. Bangkok has seen 3,447 and Tehran 2,095. At the other end of the scale, Mexico City has seen two days, London seven days, and Moscow 17.

In 1994 there were a total 468 days of extreme heat. In 2023 the figure reached 738 – a rise of 52%, based on the annualised trend line.
