Guerra Israel-Hamas, dia 122

By Phil Bainbridge

February 5, 2024 - A liderança local do Hamas pode aceitar uma trégua de seis semanas, mas a liderança política no exílio procura um cessar-fogo permanente e mais concessões.

The Institute for the Study of War says the political leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, would accept a six-week pause in the fighting possibly hoping that slowing Israel’s momentum would set the stage for a lasting truce. Israel would find it hard to resume fighting at the same intensity, allowing Hamas to survive as the governing authority. It would also allow Hamas to reorganise its military capability and re-infiltrate areas that had been cleared by the IDF. Hamas Gaza City Brigade commander is still alive and continues to make efforts at reconstituting the military force in northern Gaza.

The exiled political leadership, on the other hand, are calling for a permanent ceasefire and the the release of 3,000 Palestinian prisoners, including some of those who took part in the October 7 attacks, demands already rejected by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israel’s Bank Leumi has blocked the UNRWA account amid suspicions that funds were being used to aid terror groups in Gaza. It said it had given UNRWA multiple alerts of unusual activity in the account. Meanwhile, the EU Foreign Policy chief warned that defunding UNRWA was “disproportionate and dangerous”, despite the suspension in payments by Germany, France and others.
