The PlayStation Portal Remote Player is not a games console per se, but rather an accessory for existing PlayStation 5 owners, who wish to play their games on a handheld device.
Looking rather like a DualSense wireless controller that’s been sawn in half and had an iPad mini slotted in between, the Portal lets gamers stream content from the PS5 to the handheld over a good wi-fi connection.
The device includes all the features of the DualSense, including haptic feedback and adaptive trigger pressure, together with a bright 8-inch LCD display capable of 1080p resolution at 60 frames per second.
Detractors bemoan the fact the Portal is only a streaming device and not a self-contained handheld like the Nintendo Switch, although how Sony could have crammed the enormity of the PS5 console into a portable machine is anyone’s guess.
Rather, Sony sees the device as being ideal for households that share a main television. Family members can watch TV while another plays the PS5 via the Portal, using optional earphones if they wish.
The handheld can also be used away from home, say in a hotel, provided there are two fast wi-fi connections, one in the hotel and one at home, and that the PS5 has been left on.
The PlayStation Portal can be pre-ordered from Sony now, costing $199.99 (€219.99, £199.99), and will be released on November 15, 2023.
