A grand jury has voted to indict the former president after New York prosecutors investigated pay-outs to porn actress Stephanie Clifford -- whose screen name is Stormy Daniels -- and model Karen McDougal.
Daniels claims she and Trump had sex and accepted $130,000 from his former lawyer before the 2016 election in exchange for her silence on the extra-marital affair. McDougal admitted to an affair with Trump in 2006.
Last December, the Trump Organization was convicted of tax fraud and fined $1.6m (€1,46m). Allen Weisselberg, the organisation’s chief financial officer, was sentenced to five months in jail in January.
Trump faces another criminal prosecution after the FBI found documents bearing classified markings at Trump’s home at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, some of which were marked top secret. The Justice Department is handling this case involving a potential Espionage Act violation.
The Justice Department is also investigating whether Trump or people tied to him instigated the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, as Congress was certifying the results of the 2020 election.
In Georgia, Atlanta District Attorney Fani Willis is investigating whether Trump broke the law when he urged Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find” him 11,780 votes -- one more than Joe Biden’s margin of victory in the state.
Meanwhile, in a civil case, the business practices of his family company, the Trump Organization, are being examined by Letitia James, the New York attorney general.
A jury will begin deliberations Tuesday (May 9, 2023) in E. Jean Carroll’s civil battery and defamation lawsuit in which she alleges that Trump raped her in a Bergdorf Goodman lingerie department dressing room in the spring of 1996 and then defamed her in a social media post last October. Trump has denied the allegations.Investigating Trump
