Coroação do rei Carlos III na abadia de Westminster

By Jordi Bou

a investidura e a homenagem.

For the last 900 years, coronation ceremonies have taken place at Westminster Abbey. The service will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, whose predecessors have carried out this task since the Norman Conquest in 1066.

After the Sovereign takes the coronation oath the Archbishop anoints him with holy oil on the hands, breast and head. The king will be seated in the Coronation Chair, which was made in 1300, and is believed to have been used in every coronation since that time.

After receiving the orb and sceptres, the Archbishop places St Edward’s Crown on the Sovereign’s head.

The Queen Consort is crowned alongside the King, in a similar but simpler ceremony.

King Charles and Queen Camilla will be crowned in front of 2,000 guests, including members of the Royal Family, foreign heads of state and other dignitaries.

The British ceremony is the only remaining event of its type in Europe.
