O regresso mortífero da tempestade tropical Freddy
March 14, 2023 -
A tempestade tropical Freddy, o mais prolongado ciclone tropical nos
registos, assolou o sul da África pela segunda vez num mês, fazendo mais de 200 vítimas.
Mozambique and Malawi are the latest casualties of Tropical Storm Freddy, which has made landfall for a second time in southern Africa.
More than 100 people were killed, and many more injured, in the latest strike, which ripped roofs off buildings, brought widespread flooding and triggered landslides.
Freddy is one of the fiercest storms recorded in the southern hemisphere and may be the longest-lasting tropical cyclone in history.
The total number killed by the storm in Mozambique, Malawi and Madagascar, since it first made landfall in February, currently stands at around 136.
Scientists believe climate change is making tropical storms stronger, as warmer oceans evaporate more heat energy into the atmosphere.
