COP27
The conference, which is convened annually by the United Nations, has much to discuss, from financing the transition to clean energy to protecting the world's forests and future-proofing its cities.
Global temperatures have risen 1.1C. The likelihood of catastrophic climate events increases significantly beyond the 1.5C threshold. Constraining warming to 1.5C will require all the nations to cut emissions faster and deeper than they are already doing.
More than 35,000 delegates, including U.S. President Joe Biden and over 100 other heads of state, are expected to attend. People to watch are U.S. climate envoy John Kerry, Pakistan’s climate minister Sherry Rehman, Germany’s climate envoy Jennifer Morgan, China’s Xie Zhenhua and Ugandan activist Vanessa Nakate.
The conference officially runs from Nov 6 to Nov 18, but climate negotiations are famously contentious, so expect it to go into overtime.
