Protestos no Irão alastram a todo o país

By Duncan Mil

September 23, 2022 - A morte de Mahsa Amini, uma jovem detida pela polícia da “moralidade” do Irão, desencadeou protestos em todo o país, com as milícias Basij a usarem a força para dispersar os manifestantes.

An Amnesty International report said the group recorded the killings of twelve people, including four members of Basij, between September 16-23, during the biggest protests since 2019, when more than 300 people died.

Public protests against Amini’s death began last Friday in several parts of Iran. According to social media videos posted by Iranian citizen journalists, they spread rapidly to other areas this week, reaching 23 of Iran’s 31 provinces as of Friday (September 23, 2022).

Some social media videos contained footage of apparent anti-government protests by Iranian students in five universities, four in Tehran. They include the Allameh Tabataba’i University, Alzahra University, Islamic Azad University’s Science and Research Branch, University of Tehran, and Semnan University east of Tehran.

The U.S. Treasury Department Thursday imposed sanctions on the morality police, saying it was responsible for Amini’s death.

Iran’s president Ebrahim Raisi told a news conference on the sidelines of the UN general assembly in New York that the death of Amini while in the custody of Iran’s morality police “must certainly be investigated”.
