Combustível verde descola em Farnborough

July 18, 2022 - A Boeing e a Alder Fuels vão aumentar a produção de “combustível de
aviação sustentável” (SAF). O fabricante de aviões prometeu testar o combustível e fabricar aparelhos 100% adaptados a SAF até 2030.

Under the deal announced at Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) this morning (July 18, 2022), the partnership will ramp up the global production of SAF.

“As we work toward the civil aviation industry’s commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, we know that 700–1,000 times more SAF is needed to meet this goal,” said Sheila Remes, Boeing’s vice-president of environmental sustainability.

SAF is developed from biomass and feedstocks with a low carbon content to ensure minimal carbon dioxide emissions produced during fuel burn. Widespread use of SAF requires “drop-in” characteristics -- automatically be used in existing aircraft technology, and its performance must be comparable to or exceed existing fossil fuels during the combustion process.

According to the Sustainable Aviation SAF Roadmap launched in February 2020. Fourteen airports supply sustainable aviation fuels globally, although fuel volumes remain low.

The International Airlines Group (IAG) is part of a project to produce fuels from household waste to supply British Airways, with production starting in 2022.

And in May 2022, United Airlines, which has invested in more sustainable fuel production than any other airline in the world, became the first U.S. airline to sign an international purchase agreement for SAF.

The airline signed a deal with Neste to buy up to 52.5 million gallons over the next three years for United flights at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport and potentially other airports.
