Will Smith demite-se da Academia de Cinema?

By Duncan Mil

March 31, 2022 - Hollywood está a distanciar-se de Will Smith após oa sua agressão em palco a Chris Rock na cerimónia dos Óscares, com a Netflix e a Apple TV+ a recuarem no filme biográfico de Smith.

The board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held an emergency meeting on Wednesday night (March 30, 2022) to presumably discuss Smith slapping Rock at the Oscars.

Since the assault on Sunday night, many have wondered what punitive action the Academy will take. When Smith took the stage to receive the best-actor statuette, he delivered an emotional speech in which he apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees. “I hope the Academy invites me back,” he said.

According to the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, members must “behave ethically by upholding the Academy’s values of respect for human dignity, inclusion, and a supportive environment that fosters creativity.” The Academy is also “categorically opposed to any form of abuse, harassment or discrimination.”

In its 94-year history, the Academy has expelled only five members: Carmine Caridi, Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Roman Polanski, and cinematographer Adam Kimmel.

However, the prevailing opinion in Hollywood is that Smith’s assault on Rock will at most prove to be a minor road bump in the star’s long acting career, according to Hollywood Reporter.

One top industry veteran said the Academy could end up with more lasting reputation damage than Smith if it fails to take action. If the Academy expels Smith, it won’t affect his career, and he would still be eligible for awards.
