Despite having occupied the Chancellery for the last 16 years, the the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) commands a mere 22 percent support in the latest poll from Infratest-dimap with just one weeks to go before the election.

The CDU candidate Armin Laschet has looked gaffe-prone and weak within his own party, and the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) and its leader, Olaf Scholz has crept ahead to become the frontrunner with a 26%.

Germany’s election takes places on 26 September after which Angela Merkel will stand down after 16 years.
