Fiji Day – the national day of Fiji, celebrated on October 10 – marks the anniversary of both Fiji’s cession to Britain in 1874 and its attainment of independence in 1970.

The week leading up to Fiji Day is known as Fiji Week and consists of a series of religious and cultural events that celebrate Fiji’s diversity.

Throughout the week, Fijians are expected to share traditional lovo food with family and friends, pitch flags, plant trees, and decorate their homes in the lead-up to Fiji Day itself, when military parades take place at Albert Park in the capital, Suva.

Fiji’s Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama has said that this year’s Fiji Day celebration would be held at Albert Park at half-capacity in line with Covid-safe measures and it will be aired live throughout Fiji.
