AGENDA MUNDIAL

Acontecimentos mundiais previstos para junho

By Jordi Bou

Events in June continue to be dominated by the global coronavirus pandemic.

Jun 3, Italy: The first European nation hit hard by coronavirus reopens its borders to foreign tourists. Throughout June, the continent will gradually ease restrictions to welcome domestic and international visitors.

Jun 4, Hong Kong: People are being encouraged to light candles across the city as the annual mass vigil to mark the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre is likely to fall victim to coronavirus controls.

Jun 10-12, U.S.: President Donald Trump hosts a virtual G7 summit from Camp David. All seven leaders want to see the world return to business, which was decimated by Covid-19.

Jun 17, United Nations: Five of 10 non-permanent members will be elected to the Security Council. India and Mexico are certain to be
chosen, with Canada, Ireland, Norway, Kenya and Djibouti contesting the other three spots.

Jun 17, U.S.: Former World No. 1 Venus Williams turns 40, and has no intention of retiring. The seven-time Grand Slam champion is equally revered for her off-court fight for equal pay for women on the circuit.

Jun 18-19, European Union: A summit held by video conference is likely to focus on France and Germany’s proposed €500bn recovery fund for member states worst affected by Covid-19.

Jun 19, U.S.: Bob Dylan releases Rough and Rowdy Ways, the 79-year-old Nobel literature laureate’s first new album for eight years.

Jun 21, Africa and Asia: An annular solar eclipse will be visible from sunrise in the Congo, before crossing from Ethiopia to Yemen, Pakistan, India, China and Taiwan, and ending over the Pacific Ocean.
