Grupo dissidente do Boko Haram

Boko Haram’s long-time leader Abubakar Shekau launched military operations in 2009 to create Islamic state -- since then more than 20,000 people have been killed. Shekau continues to command militants under group’s previous name, Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati Wal-Jihad (JAS).

Abu Musab al-Barnawi Al-Barnawi’s disagreement with Boko Haram was over Shekau’s punitive and indiscriminate violence against civilians. ISWAP has conducted less frequent but more significant attacks against Nigerian military.

ISWAP’s most recent attack on the Nigerian military was the base in the village of Metele in northeastern Borno state. The death toll is among the highest since President Muhammadu Buhari came to power in 2015 and it could raise pressure on him ahead of an election in February, especially since he has said the jihadists were “technically defeated.”
