With all 10 provinces declared, Mr Mnangagwa won 50.8% of votes, compared to 44.3% for opposition leader Nelson Chamisa.

The election passed off relatively smoothly but its aftermath revealed the deep rifts in Zimbabwean society and the instinctive heavy-handedness of the security forces.

Six people died after opposition protests in Harare on Wednesday over alleged vote-rigging.

The violent crackdown has left in tatters months of careful positioning of Mnangagwa as a pro-business president seeking to end the repressive rule and international pariah status of Mr Mugabe, who ruled for 37 years.
