October 7, 2003: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Austrian-born actor turned politician, was elected governor of California. The Terminator star won 49 percent of the vote

October 8, 1895: Queen Min of Korea, who tried to stem the tide of Japanese domination in her country, was assassinated on the orders of Japanese General Goro Miura

October 9, 2017: Over half a million Rohingya Muslims were estimated to have fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh to escape the violent crackdown by Myanmar’s security forces

October 10, 1913: U.S. President Woodrow Wilson detonated explosives enabling the final stretch of the Panama Canal, linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, to be cleared

October 11, 1963: French singer and cabaret star Edith Piaf died at the age of 47. A huge star from the 1940s onwards, she is most famous for her song, Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien

October 12, 1928: The first use of an “iron lung” took place to treat a young patient suffering from polio. The medical ventilator enabled polio sufferers to breathe more normally

October 13, 2016: Bob Dylan became the first songwriter to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, for the poetry of his lyrics “within the great American song tradition”

And it will be worth the wait! The Graphic News website is undergoing a complete redesign. The new site will not only see improvements in terms of speed and user experience, but will also include many new features. For example, existing subscribers will be able to manage their accounts online via a group dashboard, and add selected graphics to lists for project planning (and which can be shared across the group).

Existing users will need to register individually - we’ll be sending instructions to our main contacts at each group and will be on hand to help you through the process, which we hope will be seamless!
