June 2-8, 2019 -- Graphics show birthdays and anniversaries for each day of the week. This week features India’s 29th state Telangana, the Great Auk, the Tiananmen Square protesters, the tennis player Novak Djokovic, Operation Overlord, codenamed D-Day, Vatican State, and George Orwell’s novel 1984

June 2, 2014: Telangana, India’s 29th state, came into being after the state of Andhra Pradesh formally split in two, ending a nearly 50-year-long struggle for separate status

June 3, 1844: The Great Auk, a large, flightless seabird, became extinct when the last pair of breeding adults were killed by hunters on Eldey island, off the coast of Iceland

June 4, 1989: Chinese army tanks entered Tiananmen Square in Beijing to oust pro-democracy protesters. Death toll estimates range from a few hundred into the thousands

June 5, 2016: Novak Djokovic won the French Open tennis to complete a career Grand Slam and become the first man since 1969 to hold all four major titles at the same time

June 6, 1944: Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, France. Operation Overlord, codenamed D-Day, was the largest seaborne invasion in history

June 7, 1929: The Papal State, a territory under the direct rule of the pope, was revived for the first time since 1870 when the Vatican State was established in Rome

June 8, 1949: George Orwell’s novel 1984 was published, warning of the dangers of totalitarianism. Its concept that “Big Brother is Watching You” is used by protesters worldwide

NEW GRAPHIC NEWS - a new website for a new era.

28 years ago — April 2, 1991 — the original Graphic News launched using a precursor to today’s websites that used email technology. These enabled infographics to be delivered electronically around the world over telephone lines. What was possible was very limited - It took 10 minutes for a 100K file to download.

Since then delivery speeds and website technology have moved on. The new website will offer the best online experience possible now, adding many new features (and offering new opportunities for the future), but still enabling existing users to select and download infographics and enjoy the distinct brand of visual journalism that is Graphic News.

Over the coming weeks I will give further information. Please contact me if you have any questions. Fiona Roberts, froberts @ graphicnews.com
