Johnson, the world’s longest floating bridge, Michael Jackson, the Grand Hassan II Mosque, monsoon floods in India, Nepal and Bangladesh, and China’s plan to cut troop numbers

August 26, 1883: The massive two-day eruption of Krakatoa began. It killed some 36,000 in Java and Sumatra and the explosion was loud enough to be heard in Australia

August 27, 1908: Lyndon Baines Johnson, 36th U.S. president, was born in Texas. He was sworn in on November 22, 1963, following the assassination of John F. Kennedy

August 28, 1963: The Evergreen Floating Bridge, the world’s longest floating bridge, first linked Seattle and Medina in Washington state. The 2.31-mile bridge was replaced in 2016

August 29, 1958: Troubled superstar Michael Jackson, the “King of Pop”, was born in Gary, Indiana. He died from an accidental overdose of sleeping drugs in June 2009

August 30, 1993: The Grand Hassan II Mosque, North Africa’s largest mosque, with a laser beam aimed at the holy city of Mecca, was dedicated in Casablanca, Morocco

August 31, 2017: The worst monsoon flooding in years killed over 1,200 people in India, Nepal and Bangladesh, with 41 million people directly affected by floods and landslides

September 1, 2003: China announced plans to cut troop numbers by 200,000. Despite the cuts China’s armed forces remain the world’s largest, currently over 2 million strong
