June 10, 1943: Hungarian journalist Laszlo Biro patented his ballpoint pen, consisting of a ball that turned freely in a socket and deposited smudge-free ink

June 11, 2017: Spain’s Rafael Nadal won a record 10th French Open title, becoming the first player in the Open era to win a single Grand Slam tournament 10 times

June 12, 1458: Magdalen College was founded in Oxford by William of Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester. Magdalen was among the first Oxford colleges to teach the sciences

June 13, 1983: The U.S. spacecraft Pioneer 10 became the first man-made object to leave the solar system, after passing Jupiter and clearing the orbit of Neptune

June 14, 2017: A massive fire at Grenfell Tower, a 24-storey apartment block in west London, killed 71 people. The cladding on the building was feared to have spread the blaze

June 15, 2006: The world’s largest marine sanctuary, supporting over 7,000 species, many of them unique to the region, was established in northwestern Hawaii

June 16, 2017: Helmut Kohl, Chancellor of Germany from 1982-98, died at the age of 87. Kohl is credited with the reunification of Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall
