January 22, 1973: The U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion. The ruling has aroused strong passions on both sides ever since, with the issue as incendiary as gun control

January 23, 1978: Sweden became the first nation to ban the use of aerosol spray cans because of fears that fluorocarbon gases contained in them depleted the ozone layer

January 24, 1848: James W. Marshall discovered a nugget of gold at Sutter’s Mill in California. The find sparked the Gold Rush that drew 300,000 people to seek their fortune

January 25, 1945: The U.S. city of Grand Rapids became the first in the world to add fluoride, a mineral found in rocks and soil, to its drinking water to reduce tooth decay

January 26, 1939: General Franco’s Nationalist forces captured Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War. The fall of the Republican capital hastened the end of the three-year conflict

January 27, 1993: The UAE officially banned the use of children aged under 15 or weighing less than 45kg as jockeys in camel races, a popular sport in the Middle East
