January 7-13, 2018 -- Graphics show birthdays and anniversaries on each day for the week.This week features Galileo Galilei, Hashemi Rafsanjani of Iran, the Spanish inventor Juan de la Cierva, the London Metropolitan underground railway, the first discotheque in the United States, Emperor Kwang-su of China, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

January 7, 1610: Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei first sighted Jupiter’s four largest satellite moons, using the telescope he had developed the previous year

January 8, 2017: Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, president of Iran from 1989 to 1997 and a dominant figure in Iranian politics since the 1980s, died at the age of 82

January 9, 1923: Spanish inventor Juan de la Cierva made the first successful flight of his autogyro, developed to fly safely at low speeds. It was the forerunner of the helicopter

January 10, 1863: The world’s first underground railway, the Metropolitan line, entered service in London. Trains stopped at seven stations between Paddington and Farringdon

January 11, 1963: The Whisky a Go-Go, the first discotheque in the United States, opened in Los Angeles. It soon became famous for its caged Go-Go dancers

January 12, 1875: Kwang-su, penultimate Emperor of China, came to the throne at age four. His aunt, the Empress Dowager Cixi, was de facto ruler until Kwang-Su came of age

January 13, 1938: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Walt Disney’s first full length Technicolour animation, went on general release following its world premiere in December
