December 10, 2007: Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner assumed office as Argentina’s first woman president, succeeding her husband, Nestor Kirchner, in the country’s top job

December 11, 1967: A prototype of the Anglo-French supersonic aircraft Concorde was rolled out at Toulouse, France, giving the world its first glimpse of the revolutionary aircraft

December 12, 2015: A deal to limit the rise in global temperatures was agreed at a climate change summit in Paris. Donald Trump has since said he will pull the U.S. out of the deal

December 13 1642: Dutch navigator Abel Tasman discovered New Zealand, but some of his men were killed after Maoris interpreted trumpet fanfares as a prelude to battle

December 14, 2004: The Millau viaduct, the world’s tallest bridge, opened in southern France. The soaring, 343m-high structure spans the Tarn valley in the Massif Central mountains

December 15, 1952: The first publically-documented sex-change operation was carried out on former U.S. soldier George Jorgensen, who took the name of Christine Jorgensen

December 15, 1979: Australia’s hairy-nosed wombat, one of the world’s rarest large mammals, was said to be nearly extinct, but conservation efforts have since seen a slow recovery
