This week features the first heart transplant operation,Cardinal Richelieu, chief minister to King Louis XIII of France, the Great Smog of London, Edison’s first sound recording, the reopening of the La Scala opera house, the flight of Chiang Kia-Shek, and the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye of South Korea.

December 3, 1967: Surgeon Christiaan Barnard carried out the world’s first heart transplant operation in Cape Town. South Africa. The patient survived for 18 days

December 4, 1642: French statesman Cardinal Richelieu died. He served as chief minister to King Louis XIII and, from 1629, was de facto ruler of the country

December 4, 1952: Around 4,000 people died when London was enveloped in the Great Smog. The toxic mix of fog and smoke led to a parliamentary act that cut smoke emissions

December 6, 1877: Thomas Edison demonstrated the world’s first sound recording, reciting “Mary had a Little Lamb” into his phonograph at his laboratory in New Jersey

December 7, 2004: La Scala opera house in Milan reopened after three years of renovations with a performance of Salieri’s Europa Riconosciuta, which opened the theatre in 1778

December 8, 1949: Chinese Nationalist forces under Chiang Kai-Shek fled to Formosa, now known as Taiwan, after defeat by the Communists in the Chinese Civil War

December 9, 2016: The National Assembly of South Korea voted to impeach President Park Geun-hye and remove her from office following a political scandal involving a close aide
