April 23-29, 2017 -- This week features the death of Saint George, a Roman soldier of Syrian origin, the birth of singer Barbra Streisand, the building of the Suez canal,the bombing of Guernica, the maiden test flight of the world’s largest passenger plane, the Airbus A380, the work of Francis Bacon, and the liberation of Dachau concentration camp.

April 23, 303BC: According to legend, Saint George, a Roman soldier of Syrian origin, died by order of the Roman emperor Diocletian for failing to recant his Christian faith

April 24, 1942: Barbra Streisand, U.S. singer, actress and filmmaker, was born. In 2015 she received America’s highest civilian honour, the Presidential Medal of Freedom

April 25, 1859: Work began on the construction of the Suez Canal, under the direction of Ferdinand de Lesseps

April 26, 1937: Planes from Nazi Germany’s Condor Legion bombed the Basque town of Guernica in support of General Franco during the Spanish Civil War

April 27, 2005: The world’s largest passenger plane, the Airbus A380, made its maiden test flight from Toulouse. The giant plane can carry up to 850 people

April 28, 1992: Francis Bacon, considered one of the greatest British artists of the 20th century, died in Madrid at the age of 82. His work was renowned for its bold, grotesque imagery

April 29, 1945: Dachau concentration camp was liberated by U.S. troops. Opened by the Nazis in 1933, more than 30,000 people died over the 12 years it was in operation
