August 19, 1930: The two arches of the Sydney Harbour Bridge were joined together after five years under construction. The bridge was eventually opened in March 1932

August 20, 1968: Troops from the Soviet Union and other Warsaw Pact nations invaded Czechoslovakia to crush the “Prague Spring” reform movement

August 21, 2017: Millions of Americans looked to the sky as a solar eclipse crossed the United States, the first time all 48 mainland states could see an eclipse since 1918

August 22, 1893: U.S. writer and satirist Dorothy Parker was born. On the subject of suicide she wrote: “Guns aren’t lawful; nooses give; gas smells awful; you might as well live”

August 23, 2016: Police in the Philippines said that over 1,900 people had been killed in a crackdown on illegal drugs since Rodrigo Duterte became president on June 30

August 24, 79: Long-dormant Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in volcanic ash and pumice. An estimated 20,000 people died

August 25, 1973: The first scan was made using CT (computed tomography), which uses computer processed x-rays to create virtual “slices” of areas inside the body
