Premier Carney roept vervroegde verkiezingen uit in Canada
March 23, 2025 - New Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is poised to call a snap federal election for April 28, according to multiple news outlets. The 60-year-old politician won the party race to replace Justin Trudeau on March 9 and is now seeking a strong mandate as relations with the U.S. deteriorate.
Carney, a former two-time central banker, is expected to pitch himself as the best candidate to take on Trump, as the country’s businesses are shaken by a trade war with the U.S.
He also hopes to capitalise on a remarkable recovery by his Liberal Party in polls since January, when the U.S. President Donald Trump began threatening Canada with punitive tariffs and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation.
