By Jordi Bou

March 10, 2025 - The war in Ukraine has helped grow U.S. dominance of the arms industry, with their exports between 2020 and 2024 jumping by more than a fifth compared with the 2015-19 period.

Data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) shows U.S. companies increased their share of global arms exports to 43% in 2020-24, from 35% in the 2015-2019 period.

U.S. arms exports amounted to about the same share of the global market as the next eight countries combined.

Ukraine alone accounted for 8.8% of global arms imports form 2020-24, and just under half of those imports were from the U.S., which under President Donald Trump has paused military aid to Kyiv.
