Huwelijken in China daalden vorig jaar met een record van 20%

By Ninian Carter

February 11, 2025 - The number of marriages in China dropped to 6.1 million in 2024, a record-breaking fall of 20.5% from the previous year – compounding the country’s plight with a declining population.

Marriages in China fell by more than 20% last year, the biggest drop on record, despite efforts by authorities to encourage young couples to wed and have children to boost the country’s waning population.

Only 6.10 million couples registered for marriage in 2024, down from 7.68 million in 2023, figures from the Ministry of Civil Affairs showed.

China has the second-biggest population in the world at 1.41 billion (India has 1.43 billion) – but one that is ageing rapidly.
