January 20, 2025 - President-elect Trump has promised pardons or commutations in the first hour of his presidency for people convicted for the January 6 Capitol siege, raising alarm among legal experts.

During the attack on the Capitol that day, over 140 police officers were assaulted and current estimates of losses arising from the siege are greater than $2.8 million. Around 1,583 people have been charged in federal court, and 1,270 convicted, including 1,000 who pleaded guilty. All 1,583 were charged with trespass or disorderly conduct. In addition, 608 were charged for assaulting or impeding law enforcement officers, 174 for assault with a deadly or dangerous weapon. 180 people have been charged with entering a restricted area with a deadly or dangerous weapon, 91 for destruction of government property, 68 for theft of government propoerty and 18 for seditious conspiracy, the most serious charge brought against any of the perpetrators.

Joe Biden announced that he will commute the sentences of 2,500 non-violent drug offenders January 17, saying he has now issued more individual pardons and commutations than any of his predecessors. providing clemency to people who were sentenced “based on discredited distinctions between crack and powder cocaine and outdated sentencing enhancements for drug crimes”, according to the White House. The commutations still require confirmation and therefore do not feature in official figures.
