De levende legende die Santa Claus is!

By Ninian Carter

December 23, 2024 - Saint Nicholas was a wealthy Greek bishop in fourth-century Asia Minor – modern Turkey – who gave secret gifts of gold to the poor. Known in Dutch as Sinterklaas, a corruption of Sint-Nicolaas, he merged with the English Father Christmas character to create the modern Santa Claus.

Throughout the centuries, innumerable stories have been told of the life and times of St. Nicholas – many of which have been incorporated into modern-day Christmas celebrations.

From his ancient origins as the patron saint of children, sailors and ships, to his redesign by The Coca-Cola company, Santa Claus is an amalgamation of many traditions and legends from around the world.
