January 1, 2025 - January 31, 2025 - Events in January include the inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump, the opening of a new NATO mission to aid Ukraine, presidential elections in Belarus, the CES expo in Las vegas and the Chinese Year of the Snake. Romania and Bulgaria join Europe’s Schengen area, Britain implements an entrance fee to travellers, and Poland marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz.

Jan 20, U.S.: Donald Trump will be sworn in as president of the United States, ushering in his second term in office and capping one of the most remarkable political comebacks in American history.

Jan, Germany: A new NATO mission located in Wiesbaden will take over the coordination of western military aid for Ukraine. The mission is widely seen as an effort to safeguard the aid mechanism against interference by Donald Trump.

Jan 26, Belarus: Alexander Lukashenko, the dictator who has run the country since 1994 and a staunch ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is likely to secure a seventh straight term in presidential elections.

Jan 29, China: New Year festivities will ring in the Year of the Snake. This zodiac sign is said to indicate intuition, calm and intelligence.

Jan 8, UK: Non-Europeans wanting to visit Britain need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) which costs £10. Europeans will be required to have an ETA for travel from Apr 2.

Jan 1, Europe: Seventeen years after Romania and Bulgaria joined the European Union, they will fully sign up to Europe’s open-borders Schengen area.

Jan 5-10, U.S.: Companies and startups showcase AI advancements across mobility, robotics, healthtech, defence, space, retail and entertainment at CES, the world’s largest electronics expo in Las Vegas.

Jan 27, Poland: World leaders will join ageing Holocaust survivors to mark 80 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp by Soviet troops.
