December 3, 2024 - French President Emmanuel Macron said he will name a new prime minister "in the coming days", after Michel Barnier resigned following a no-confidence vote in parliament.

Barnier’s government became the first to fall to a no-confidence vote since 1962, after being ousted by a combination of the left-wing NFP coalition and the far-right National Rally (RN) over attempts to push through an “austerity budget” without a vote in the National Assembly.
Macron took two months to personally choose Barnier in the summer, and is now under pressure to seek consensus from the political parties in the National Assembly on the latest appointment.

While the selection of a new Prime Minister is underway, and with no deadline to complete that process, Michel Barnier will lead a caretaker government that will be limited by its inability to enact any new laws.
