Trumps strafzaken (1)

By Duncan Mil

November 19, 2024 - Donald Trump has been reelected to the White House and charged with four criminal cases. The 78-year-old has received the first criminal conviction of a former U.S. president.

No other criminal defendant in U.S. history has had the power to shut down his prosecution.

One exception is the New York State case. A jury found Trump guilty in May 2024 of 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records to cover up hush-money payments to the adult film star Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 election.

New York State Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan has paused all proceedings in the case in light of Trump’s reelection at the request of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office.

They asked the judge to consider “non-dismissal options” that could include “deferral of all remaining criminal proceedings until after the end of Defendant’s upcoming presidential term” in 2029.

If the court’s decision sentences Trump, that will formalise his record as a convicted felon, and a criminal will become president of the United States.

Once in office, Trump can cancel three federal prosecutions of himself and his allies.
