Orkaan Milton teistert Florida en verwoest huizen

October 10, 2024 - Hurricane Milton marched across central Florida after making landfall on the state's west coast, destroying homes and knocking out power to more than three million customers.

The storm made landfall around 8:30 p.m. EDT (0030 GMT) on Wednesday as a Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120mph (195km/h) near Siesta Key, the U.S. National Hurricane Centre said.

While still a dangerous storm, this was less violent than the rare Category 5 hurricane that had threatened the state as it trekked over the Gulf of Mexico toward Florida.

At least two deaths were reported at a retirement community following a suspected tornado in Fort Pierce on the east coast, NBC News reported, citing St. Lucie County Sheriff Keith Pearson.

Milton weakened as it crossed land, dropping to a Category 1 hurricane with top sustained winds of 85mph (145km/h) as it reached the peninsula's east coast, the National Hurricane Center said.
