Oct 1, Belgium: Dutch ex-Prime Minister Mark Rutte becomes NATO’s new Secretary General at a critical time for European security as war rages in Ukraine.

Oct 1, Mexico: Former Mexico City mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, 62, will be sworn in as the country’s first female president. She will serve a six-year term through 2030.

Oct 7, Middle East: One year after Hamas carried out the deadliest attack in Israeli history and Israel responded with a devastating offensive in the Gaza Strip, a rapidly escalating conflict engulfing Lebanon is stirring fears of wider war.

Oct 10, Cape Canaveral: NASA launches its Europa Clipper spacecraft to explore Jupiter’s moon Europa and determine whether the ocean suspected of being beneath its icy crust is habitable.

Oct 12-20, Spain: The final races of the 37th America’s Cup take place in Barcelona. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is defending the title in the oldest competition in international sport.

Oct 22-24, Russia: Iran’s new President Masoud Pezeshkian is expected to attend the BRICS summit in Russia, amid tensions with the West over military cooperation between the two countries. The summit in Kazan will also evaluate Turkey’s
membership application.

Oct, U.S.: Two giant pandas – Bao Li and female Qing Bao – sent by China as “envoys of friendship”, will debut in the National Zoo in Washington, DC, signaling a new era of panda diplomacy between the two superpowers.
