Paus Franciscus begint aan langste reis van zijn pausdom

By Jordi Bou

September 2, 2024 - September 13, 2024 - Pope Francis takes the longest tour of his 11-year papacy, visiting four island nations in an ambitious trip that will test the strength of the 87-year-old Catholic Church leader.

Over 12 days, Francis will travel nearly 33,000km to visit Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor and Singapore.

In each of the four countries, the pope will hold official meetings with political authorities, diplomats, and local Catholics. He will also lead outdoor celebrations of the Catholic Mass in all four countries, Reuters reports.

Catholic officials broadly see Asia as fertile ground to expand the faith, which has experienced decline in Western countries.

Francis will be the third pope to visit Indonesia. The trip was originally planned for 2020 but was called off because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
