June 26, 2024 - PwC’s latest “Hopes and Fears” survey* shows workers are embracing emerging technologies such as generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and upskilling amid workplace uncertainty.

About 45% of more than 56,000 workers surveyed by PwC in 50 countries said they have experienced rising workloads and an accelerating workplace change in the last 12 months, with 62% saying they have seen more change at work in the past year than the previous 12 months.

Pete Brown, global workforce leader at PwC UK, stressed that employees now value companies that invest in their professional growth. Upskilling places an “increased premium” on businesses to prioritize and enhance employee experience.

Among employees who use GenAI programmes daily -- ChatGPT or Dall-E -- 82% said they expect it to increase their efficiency in the next 12 months.

Nearly half of those surveyed by PwC expected GenAI to generate higher salaries, with almost two-thirds hoping these emerging tools will improve the quality of their work.

“The findings suggest that job satisfaction is no longer enough,” said Carol Stubbings, global markets and tax and legal services leader at PwC UK.

The survey highlighted the necessity for employers to invest in their staff and technological platforms. This, she emphasised, is crucial not only to alleviate work pressures but also to retain top talent.
