Modi wint verkiezingen India maar krijgt tegenslag

By Jordi Bou

June 5, 2024 - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to retain power at the head of a ruling coalition but his Hindu nationalist party lost its outright majority for the first time in a decade.

Official results from India’s Election Commission showed the NDA won 286 seats, more than the 272 seats needed to secure a majority but far fewer than had been expected.

That means Modi will need the support of other parties in his coalition — a stunning blow for the 73-year-old, who had hoped for a landslide victory.

Two allies in Modi’s National Democratic Alliance coalition, the Telugu Desam Party, a key regional player in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, and the Janata Dal (United), which rules the northern state of Bihar, have already pledged their support.

More than 640 million votes were cast in the marathon election held over a span of six weeks in the world’s largest democratic exercise.
