July 17, 2024 - Sotheby’s will auction “Apex” -- a Stegosaurus fossil -- in New York this summer. Apex is the most complete Stegosaurus fossil ever found and is expected to fetch up to $6 million.

The Stegosaurus ungulates inhabited Earth in the late Jurassic period, between 161 and 146 million years ago. The palaeontologist who discovered the fossil has named it Apex.

Jason Cooper found the fossil on his
property near the aptly named Colorado town of Dinosaur in the United States in May 2022.

Sotheby’s in New York will auction the fossil, which measures 3.35m tall and 6.09m long (11 feet by 20 feet), on July 17.

“Apex marks an incredibly important milestone, as simply one of the best fossils of its kind ever unearthed. Stegosaurus is one of the most universally recognizable dinosaur species, whose unmistakable silhouette has been a source of fascination and wonder for generations,” said Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby’s Global Head of Science & Popular Culture.

Sotheby’s has meticulously collaborated with the owner, ensuring that every step of the process, from the initial discovery to the final mounting, is documented with utmost care and precision.
