Israël onder druk om aanval op Rafah

By Jordi Bou

May 28, 2024 - Israel is under pressure to explain how a “precision strike” on Rafah resulted in a firestorm that killed dozens of Palestinians.

Palestinian officials said at least 45 people had been killed and more than 200 injured after fires and explosions triggered by the strike ripped through a UN facility for displaced people in Rafah’s Tal al-Sultan neighbourhood.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the deaths a “tragic accident” and the Israeli military prosecutor ordered an investigation into the strike, saying the country regretted “any harm to uninvolved civilians”.

Israel’s military campaign in Gaza began after gunmen from Hamas attacked Israel on Oct 7, killing about 1,200 people and taking 252 others back to Gaza as hostages.

More than 36,000 Palestinians have been killed in the war since then, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry.
