By Phil Bainbridge

June 14, 2024 - July 14, 2024 - In 2020, Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal became the overall top scorer in the tournament after netting five times to take his total to 14, while Michel Platini of France holds the record for most goals in a single showpiece, with nine in 1984.

Germany opens the tournament against Scotland at the Allianz Arena in Munich on June 14, before facing contests with Hungary and Switzerland, the other teams in Group A. Reigning champions Italy kick off their campaign against Albania in Dortmund, in a fiercely competitive Group B that also includes Spain and Croatia. Tournament favourites France and England, each revelling in their talented generations, begin their quest for silverware against Austria and Serbia respectively, while debutants Georgia start their UEFA Euro adventure against Turkey.

Between 1960 and 2008, the Golden Boot was awarded to the top scorer in each tournament. Since 2020, a new award sponsored by Chinese company Alipay is given to the leading goalscorer. French talisman Kylian Mbappé and England’s Harry Kane are among the favourites to top the scoring charts by July 14.
