April 24, 2024 - The U.S. and UK approved new military aid packages for Ukraine as the war-torn country appealed for more firepower to fight Russian President Vladimir Putin’s latest attacks.

The Senate passed the $61 billion (€57.1bn) in war aid to Ukraine late Tuesday after the House of Representatives had approved the package Saturday.

“Tonight, a bipartisan majority in the Senate joined the House to answer history’s call at this critical inflection point,” President Joe Biden said.

The UK, in a show of solidarity, has approved a £500 million (€580m) support package for Ukraine. This includes crucial equipment such as long-range missiles and four million rounds of ammunition.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak spoke with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday morning to confirm the assistance.

The shipment will include British Storm Shadow long-range cruise missiles. Some Western leaders have expressed concerns that sending Storm Shadow missiles may escalate tensions with Moscow.

Kiel Institute’s Ukraine Support Tracker calculates that $108.5bn (€101.5bn) of military aid has been pledged to Ukraine by 30 countries since January 2022. The latest U.S. and British commitments increase this to $170bn (€159bn).
