Palestinijnse ontheemding versnelt

By Phil Bainbridge

March 11, 2024 - An increase in settler violence and settlement expansion in the West Bank following the terror attacks on Israel by Hamas on October 7 risks eliminating the possibility of a viable Palestinian state according to a UN report.

Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories have expanded to an additional 24,300 housing units, while settler violence peaked at an average of eight incidents per day in the month after the attacks. The report which will be presented to the Human Rights Council in Geneva in late March but Israel says it ignores the deaths of 36 Israelis in 2023.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk warned that the growth of Israeli settlements amounted to the transfer by Israel of its population into an occupied territory, which he described as a war crime, while the Biden administration has criticised the settlements as “inconsistent” with international law.
