Drie doden bij eerste dodelijke Houthi-aanval op scheepvaart in Rode Zee

By Jordi Bou

March 7, 2024 - The campaign of attacks by Yemen’s Houthis on merchant vessels has claimed its first fatalities with a strike on a cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden that left three seafarers dead and four injured.

The Barbados-flagged True Confidence was hit at about 11:30 local time (08:30 GMT) on Mar 6, killing one Vietnamese and two Filipino seafarers.

A picture posted by U.S. Central Command (Centcom) of the vessel shows that the missile had inflicted severe damage to the accommodation block housing crew cabins.

The ship has now been abandoned and is drifting with a fire on board.

The attack seems likely to have been a result of the ship’s previous ownership by Oaktree, one of the U.S. private equity firms that is most active in shipping investment.

The Houthis started a campaign of attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden in November, following the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas.

Since then, the Iran-backed group has attacked more than 40 ships.

The most serious previous assault, on February 19, led to the sinking of the UK-owned
bulk carrier Rubymar.
