CONFLICT

Dodental Gaza stijgt tot boven 25.000

By Duncan Mil

January 22, 2024 - More than 25,000 Palestinians have been killed in the war between Israel and Hamas, with over 62,680 wounded, according to the Health Ministry in the Gaza Strip.

The ministry’s figures are mainly deemed accurate by the UN but do not differentiate between militants and civilians.

Twenty-five thousand people, equivalent to 1% of the 2,300,000 population of Gaza, means more than 234 people have died every day.

Meanwhile, talks over the release of 136 hostages in Gaza remain at an impasse over Hamas’ demand for a permanent cease-fire.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing growing pressure at home and abroad to agree to a cease-fire deal. Israeli officials say at least 195 soldiers have been killed so far during the Gaza war.

On Monday, a group of hostage’s relatives stormed a parliamentary committee session at Israel’s Knesset to demand more action to secure the release of their loved ones.

“We came here because we can’t live anymore,” Gil Dickmann, the cousin of hostage Carmel Gat, said. “Our life stopped. The parliament must stop everything and bring all the hostages home.”

Netanyahu, who is also facing pressure from members of his war Cabinet to agree to a deal, dismissed the idea of a Palestinian state last night in a break with U.S. President Joe Biden.
