Vulkaan barst uit op IJslandse schiereiland Reykjanes

December 19, 2023 - A volcano erupted late on Monday in southwest Iceland, spewing lava and smoke across a wide area after weeks of intense earthquake activity.

The eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula started late on Monday about 4km northeast of the fishing town of Grindavik.

Authorities last month evacuated the nearly 4,000 inhabitants of the town and closed the nearby Blue Lagoon geothermal spa.

Lava from the eruption appeared to flow away from Grindavik, offering hope that homes would be spared, geologists and rescue officials said on Tuesday, according to Reuters.
